What does it take to turn a bundle of raw materials, wires, and electronic components into an aircraft that actually conquers the skies? This month on the AISB field, our Middle School Aviation Club answered that question with a display of engineering that left onlookers genuinely breathless.
Over an intensive multi-week journey, these young students stepped far beyond theory. They researched concepts, tested prototypes, and meticulously built every element of their remote-controlled (RC) airplanes from scratch. They did not just assemble pre-made kits; they engineered actual flying mechanisms—wiring the electronics, integrating transmitters and receivers, configuring servos, and mastering the delicate mechanics of thrust, pitch, roll, and yaw. To see Middle School students successfully troubleshooting and constructing fully functional aircraft engines and control systems was a deeply proud moment for our community.

Powered by Passion and Mentorship

This extraordinary experience highlights the incredible strength of our educators, who continuously design learning opportunities that push the boundaries of what is possible. A heartfelt thank you goes to Stephen Weggelaar for dreaming up, designing, and leading this brilliant club and and to Brian Farrell, who dedicated immense effort, time, and support to the program. By providing the perfect blend of technical expertise and encouraging scaffolding, they gave our students the confidence to embrace complex engineering, navigate technical inspections, and transform abstract physics into a tangible reality.

The final official club meeting turned into a beautiful community celebration on the AISB field. Parents, faculty, and peers gathered to watch the aircraft take to the air for their official maiden flights. As the students piloted their creations through the sky in a friendly competition, managing the wind and controls in real time, the sheer pride on their faces spoke volumes.

The Ultimate Validation

Perhaps the most heartwarming moment of the entire project came as the afternoon wound down. Although this was scheduled as the final official club meeting of the year, the students simply did not want the experience to end. Filled with excitement from their successful flights, they eagerly asked their mentors for just one more class to keep testing, tweaking, and flying. There is no more beautiful validation for a program than when students look at a completed challenge and ask for more time to learn.

While these planes have successfully landed, the journey of discovery is just beginning. We are incredibly proud of our young engineers, and we cannot wait to see where their passion for aviation, science, and creative problem-solving takes them next!
