Elementary Program of Studies

The Elementary School at AISB has introduced the "Balanced School Day", which consists of three 100-minute instructional blocks and two nutrition/activity breaks in which children have time to eat and time to play.

This structure increases concentration levels of students, promotes more positive play time and more physically active students. Furthermore, it provides better opportunities for learning through uninterrupted blocks of teaching/learning time.

The Grade 1 and 2 program follow an integrated format centering around units of studies. These units are developed through learning centers, which encourage children to select class projects and activities to support their individual learning experience.

We provide a language rich curriculum that encourages children to increase their vocabularies while incorporating reading and writing into their everyday lives. Our Language Arts are very important to us. By the end of the first grade the children will become effective readers and writers.

Our students learn to think and communicate mathematically through lessons designed by the University of Chicago's "Everyday Mathematics Program". This program encourages exploration, develops problem-solving skills and allows for the open discussion of mathematical ideas.

Specialist Teachers teach Physical Education, Music, Art, Hungarian Culture and Technology. A Learning Specialist is also available for children needing a little extra help.

The core classes for Grades 3-5, taught by the Homeroom Teacher, include Language Arts (reading, writing, spelling), Math (Everyday Maths), Science and Social Studies. The classroom program is enriched by Specialist Teachers in Art, Music, Drama, Physical Education, Technology, Hungarian Culture (Grade 3) and World Language (Grades 4 & 5). World Language instruction is an important component of the grade 4 & 5 curriculum. Students in Grades 4 and 5, who are not receiving ESL or Learning Support service, choose between beginning Spanish, French or German.

The program for Grades 3-5 strives for a balance between academic, physical and social activities. It is designed to help students "bridge" or transition between primary and middle school.

The Elementary School's After-School Activity Program offers a wide variety of enriching activities that include swimming, ball games, technology, choir, drama, arts and crafts. Each activity meets after school from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30p.m.

On addition, classroom curriculum is enhanced by field trips into the local community. Trips at all grade levels focus on various aspects of Hungarian Culture and take advantage of the diverse and rich cultural and historical opportunities present in Budapest.
