High School Program of Studies

AISB is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (USA), the Council of International Schools (London, UK) and is recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (Geneva, Switzerland). AISB High School enrolls 225 students representing nearly forty countries. The average class size is 15. Students must demonstrate English competency within two years of grade level to enter grades 9 or 10.

Curriculum

The high school curriculum is predominantly college preparatory. Most graduates continue their educational careers at universities in North America and Europe. Graduates receive an AISB high school diploma and the majority of our seniors earn a full International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Instruction is in English, with English as a Second Language provided for students requiring English language support. The academic program prepares all students for a United States high school diploma. Students must enroll in seven courses each year which typically include: English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Art, Physical Education or Computer and a World Language. Community service, as well as computer literacy, are part of the graduation requirements. The guidance counselor assists high school students with career education and the university admission process.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma is available to students in grades 11 and 12. Typically, two-thirds of our graduating seniors earned the full IB Diploma. The IB Diploma is awarded after completing the study of six courses for two years and passing an external exam in all subjects, writing an original research essay, and participating in a program of at least 150 hours of CAS (Creativity, Action, Service). Students may be enrolled in these courses as full IB Diploma candidates or on an individual certificate basis.

Because this program is based on external exams and prescribed syllabi, it is portable. Over 1300 schools worldwide offer the IB Diploma. Higher level IB courses are considered Honors courses. The IB Diploma is recognized as a valid university entrance certificate by many top colleges and universities worldwide.

Requirements for AISB High School Diploma

The minimum requirement for students who have been enrolled in AISB since the ninth grade is to accumulate 24 credits as listed below. Computer literacy is also a graduation requirement.

Students must also contribute to the school's commitment to community service through participation in the variety of CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) activities which are offered.

Scheduling of Courses

The academic scheduling of courses is done in consultation with the student, parents, counselor, principal, and IB coordinator. Students new to AISB may require testing in English, mathematics and world language at the time of enrollment in order to determine an appropriate schedule.

Testing

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) is administered to all students in grades 10-11. Juniors and Seniors sit for the Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT I and SAT II: Subject Tests), Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), and the International Baccalaureate external Examinations.
