ADMISSION AND ENROLLMENT

AISB is a rich and stimulating learning environment in part due to the diversity of our student body. This reflects a relatively open admissions policy. From experience, we have developed procedures and criteria for admissions, which ensure that we will continue to attract students whose needs we can meet and who will make a contribution to the school community.

Student applicants will be accepted for admissiongabifanni
unless there is reason to believe that admission is not in the best interest of the applicant or the school. It is the policy of the Board that no person will be denied admission to the school because of race, color, national or ethnic origin, or religion. The school will make every effort to accept all qualified applicants.

ADMISSIONS POLICY

Admission and continued enrollment will be determined by the principal, based on the following two factors, as reflected in the application materials:

1.

The potential of the applicant to benefit from the educational services available at AISB, and

2.

The capacity of AISB to meet the educational needs of the applicant.

ADMISSIONS GUIDELINES

The following criteria and procedures guide the admissions process:

1) Prospective applicants must provide the following documentation before enrollment is determined:

  •      Transcripts/report cards from their current school translated into English
  •       Completed application form, including all medical/immunization records translated into English
  •       Student Reference Form completed by previous school
  •      Verification of date of birth

2) AISB accepts students with no previous experience with English from grades pre-K to 6. In grades 7-12, prospective students should demonstrate increasing levels of language proficiency, as determined by an English language assessment administered at AISB. The development of academic language takes time and the school is committed to preparing students thoroughly for the college or university of their choice. Therefore, students entering grades 10-12 must have a substantial level of English language competency.

If neither parent speaks English, we require a translator to be present during the admissions interviews. In such cases, we also require, prior to the first day of classes, parents to provide the name, address and phone number of an English speaking interpreter who will be available for parent-school meetings as needed throughout the year.

3) Prospective and continuing students must demonstrate through their performance, as reflected in school records and/or testing, their ability to meet AISB’s academic and behavioral standards. The American International School of Budapest offers a strong academic, university preparatory program. As such, we are unable to admit or continue the enrollment of students with learning/behavioral disabilities or special learning needs who require:

  • placement in a learning resource center in excess of 30% of the school day, or
  • substantial modification of the existing academic curriculum.

4) Students eligible for admission according to the above standards will receive an acceptance letter and must pay a non-refundable Registration Fee of $650 before their names will be placed on a class list. Any student not currently enrolled in the school must pay the registration fee.

5) Students are eligible to begin the pre-kindergarten program if they are 4 years old on or before September 1 of that school year. Students are eligible to begin kindergarten if they are 5 years old on or before September 1 of that school year. Students are eligible to enter grade 1 if they are 6 years old on or before September 1 of that school year. Students for other grade levels are placed in grades that most nearly approach the chronological age for the student taking into account the academic history.

• grade two:

7 years on or before September 1

• grade three:

8 years on or before September 1

• grade four:

9 years on or before September 1

• grade five:

10 years on or before September 1

• grade six:

11 years on or before September 1

• grade seven:

12 years on or before September 1

• grade eight:

13 years on or before September 1

• grade nine:

14 years on or before September 1

• grade ten:

15 years on or before September 1

• grade eleven:

16 years on or before September 1

• grade twelve:

17 years on or before September 1

High school students are eligible to apply for admission only if their projected graduation date falls before their 20th birthday (21st if enrolled in IB Diploma Program).

6) Throughout their attendance at AISB, all students must live with their parents or legal guardians. This means parents/guardians must actually reside here in the Budapest area with their children.

The American International School of Budapest accepts the placement recommendations of other American or international schools with a US type curriculum. Such recommendations will be considered for those entering grade 1 and above.

REGISTRATION AND ENROLLMENT PROCEDURE

Applicants for admission to AISB are registered and enrolled upon acceptance, in accordance with the Admissions Policy, and payment of the $650 Registration Fee.

Applications for the 2009-2010 school year are continuously accepted.

In the event of a grade level enrollment reaching maximum capacity, a waiting list is generated. Qualified applicants are placed on the waiting list, as of the date of completing all application requirements, including payment of the $650 Registration Fee. Wait list applicants are enrolled as vacancies occur due to departing students or addition of expansion classes.

Students returning to AISB the next school year are asked to register no later than June 1.
